Serves: One lively home crowd
Preparation time: A full afternoon of effort
Cooking time: Two halves of competitive hockey
Setting: Hunters’ final home game of the 2025/26 season, under lovely weather for a hockey match
Ingredients
1 determined Hunters squad
1 visiting side of Haverhill
Ali T in goal (third appearance, nicely settled)
Strong defensive portions of Andrea and Rayhana
A generous handful of midfield skills from Darcey and Isla
1 growing dash of confidence from Esme pressing forward
Several near-miss chances from Hannah and Jenny
1 well-earned penalty flick converted by Emily
A supportive sideline crowd
Excellent filming from Ros
1 injured umpire (handle with care)
Post-match teas with complimentary spicy potatoes
Method
Preheat the pitch with some lovely sunshine and ideal conditions for a game of hockey, perfect for the Hunters’ last home fixture of the season.
Start the match by placing Ali T firmly in goal for her third outing. Allow her to settle early as Haverhill begin applying pressure.
Add four Haverhill goals in the first half, stirring frequently while Hunters work hard to keep shape. Mix in some excellent defending from Andrea and Rayhana to prevent the scoreline growing even faster.
Fold in midfield creativity, letting Darcey and Isla show some lovely skills as they move the ball around and try to build attacks.
Sprinkle forward pressure from Esme, who grows in confidence as the match progresses and pushes higher up the pitch.
Season with chances, including near misses from Hannah and Jenny that come tantalisingly close to reducing the deficit.
Pause briefly when an umpire unfortunately picks up an injury. Allow the game to reset before continuing.
Resume cooking for the second half, adding another four goals for Haverhill while Hunters keep battling throughout.
Introduce the highlight ingredient: a Hunters penalty flick. Emily steps up, remembering all that training practice, and confidently converts it—proof that preparation pays off.
Keep the atmosphere lively with plenty of sideline support and Ros capturing the action with some great filming.
Finish the match and let the team cool down while looking ahead with growing confidence to the final game of the season against Cambridge South.
Serving suggestion
Best enjoyed with post-match teas, good company, and some unexpectedly free spicy potatoes.
Chef’s note: Despite the result, the team showed determination, flashes of skill, and plenty of promise—perfect ingredients to carry strong confidence into the final fixture of the season.
