Hunters vs Haverhill

Emily Stevenson24 Nov - 10:20

The Cold, The Chaos & The Chip Butties

The Hunters marched out to face top-of-the-league Haverhill with a fierce squad of exactly eleven. Perfect for those who enjoy cardio, commitment, and the comforting knowledge that no one is ever coming off for a rest.

The weather opened kindly, giving us a dry first half to trick us into thinking we might stay somewhat warm. Then the second half hit — sideways rain, plummeting temperatures, and that special kind of cold that makes you question all your life choices. Base layers were out in full force and still not emotionally prepared.

Ros guarded the goal brilliantly, pulling off confident saves and staying unfazed while the weather tried to turn her into a human icicle.

Our defence was heroic:

Alie W was calm and controlled, sweeping up danger without fuss. Midge put in a solid defensive shift, reading the game well and clearing the ball with confidence.

Stacey was relentless and energetic, until she famously became entangled in the sideline net while retrieving a ball, gaining herself a well-earned joint Lemon.

Ali H was outstanding — rock steady, smart, and everywhere she needed to be. She was rightly named Player of the Match… and then immediately balanced the universe by earning joint Lemon after managing to get her own stick stuck in another sideline net...

In midfield: Hannah made confident drives and smooth transitions,
Ali T put in a huge work rate, chasing everything,
and Isla played brilliantly despite turning up in the wrong-coloured socks — a bold fashion statement that earned her the third Lemon. Rules are rules.

Up front: Emily S worked hard on the break and caused plenty of trouble for the defence. Emily D found space well and supported the play consistently. Maya made great runs and pressed the opposition, helping keep the Hunters dangerous even against strong opposition. She very nearly scored us a goal, only for the umpire to blow the whistle giving as a shirt corner just before it crossed the line...

A big shoutout to Joan for braving the cold and delivering top-tier sideline support.

After the match, everyone thawed out over chip butties provided by Haverhill — a spiritual experience after 70 minutes of arctic conditions.

Despite no subs, freezing rain, and a hostile net determined to humiliate our defenders, Hunters put on a cracking performance full of grit, humour, and great team spirit.

Another excellent week of hockey — and a reminder that sometimes the toughest opponent isn’t top of the league… it’s the equipment.
