The 2025/26 season got underway with an early-morning road trip for Huntingdon & Northstowe Hockey Club, as the team travelled to King’s Lynn to take on Pelicans in the first match of the season. With a number of returning players and some fresh faces making their debuts, there was a real buzz of anticipation—and caffeine—as the squad assembled for the long journey.
Despite the early start and the challenge of having no substitutes, meaning every player was on the pitch for the full 70 minutes, the team put in a fantastic shift, showing grit, determination, and plenty of team spirit.

Ros took her place between the posts and quickly reminded everyone why she’s so vital to this squad. A string of outstanding saves kept Pelicans at bay, including several close-range blocks and one remarkable diving stop that drew applause even from the opposition. Her calm presence under pressure gave the team confidence throughout.

Imogen put in a typically fearless performance in midfield, constantly finding herself in the thick of the action. Whether it was the right place or the wrong time (judging by the collection of bruises she took home), her commitment was unmatched. She broke up play, made crucial interceptions, and was always available for the pass—a key cog in the engine room.

Isla and Maya were instrumental in driving the team forward, showing off their technical skills and determined runs. Their link-up play was excellent, repeatedly turning defence into attack with clever passes and brave carries. It was their relentless energy that helped turn the tide when the team needed to regain territory.

The breakthrough moment came in the second half when Emily pounced on a loose ball at the top of the D. With calm precision, she slotted it past the keeper to open the team’s account for the season. It was a just reward for the team’s persistence and pressure.

At the back, Lizzie and Stacey were outstanding. Their positioning, communication, and well-timed tackles were crucial in keeping Pelicans at bay. Time and again, they shut down attacks, cleared the lines, and gave Ros the cover she needed. It was a real masterclass in disciplined defending.

Jenny brought energy in abundance on the wings, chasing down every ball, putting pressure on the opposition, and making important runs to stretch the game. Her relentless pursuit of possession and clever positioning gave the team width and kept Pelicans guessing.

Unfortunately, Pelicans proved to be tough opponents, and despite a valiant effort, the scoreline didn’t quite reflect the hard work and determination shown by the Huntingdon & Northstowe squad. However, there were plenty of positives to take from the match, and the team will be looking to improve on the result in next week’s game.

Plenty to be proud of, and plenty to build on. Bring on the next match!
